Today I invite you to a listening challenge. The goal is to grow in our ability to live our life with Christ. Jesus was a good listener, he often spoke to people at their heart level rather than just responding to the words that they were saying. Like when Jesus spoke to the woman at the well in John 4:1-26.

The challenge is to at least once today deliberately listen to someone you have talking to and give them your full attention with the intention of better understanding them.

What makes them tick, what are they afraid of, what are they hoping for or wanting? Do this to be more like Christ, and ask Christ to help you to do it.
Once you have listened, think about how you can better pray for that person and pray for them.

Lastly, share how you went without breaking any confidence or giving details. Let us know whether you remembered, whether you tried and what you found hard.

Don’t worry if nothing happens. We aren’t looking for results or victories or miracles. The result, victory and miracle is in us trying to be more like Christ in becoming better listeners in Jesus’ name. In this way we will grow in living our life with Christ.

  1. I had two conversations at church where I gave my whole attention to listening. I hope the people I spoke to felt this, that they were important to me, that they mattered and that I cared for them. In this way I hope that I reflected Christ towards them in making the effort to overcome distractions so that I could connect with them in a helpful way. How did you get on?
